EEF Future Manufacturing Awards − South West winners announced

Haystack Dryers, a Ferndown manufacturer of full body dryers found at theme parks and swimming pools, has been named among the country´s top companies in this year´s EEF Future Manufacturing Awards.

The Dorset-based company has won the EEF South West Region Business Growth Award in recognition of its success in growing its business even during the economic downturn.

The annual awards are hosted by EEF, the manufacturers´ organisation, and recognise excellence in enterprise, innovation, environmental performance and skills development among UK manufacturers.

The company received the accolade at a special award ceremony in Bristol in acknowledgement of the success of its innovative range of full body dryers developed for installation at water parks and theme parks.

Haystack´s strong export performance has led to growth in sales across Europe and in the US, where the company opened a new office and succeeded in attracting customers such as Universal Studios and SeaWorld.

Chair of the judging panel, Professor Steve Evans, Professor of Life Cycle Engineering at Cranfield University, said the company was an exemplar for the region in driving business success.

"This is just the sort of business that British industry needs," he said. "This is an inspiring story of a company succeeding through innovative product design and focused marketing, which has resulted in a doubling of turnover and a significant increase in profitability."

Terry Slater, South West Region Director for EEF, commented: "Manufacturing in the South West is increasingly important as an economic driver for the UK. Innovative companies such as Haystack Dryers demonstrate that well-run manufacturing businesses have a very bright future and are critical to the long term economic success of the region and of the country as a whole."

The regional winners will compete in the national finals, the winners of which will be announced on 27 January at a ceremony at Merchant Taylor´s Great Hall in the City of London.

Chicago Sun Times

In his guidebook, Vanderwilt describes the Dells' history, explaining how, in 1886, photographer Henry Hamilton Bennett used a stop-action camera he invented to snap a picture of his son Ashley jumping from one ledge to another. The photo, which caught the boy in mid-flight, became a sensation and drew people to the area for its natural beauty.

Today, many people come to the Dells and never see the wild, content to stay within the tourist zone marked by neon signs and oversized carnival-type attractions. But Chula Vista, a resort a few miles away from the bright lights, embraces the environment.

A higher-end resort with a golf course, Chula Vista is built on the banks of the Wisconsin River; the views from many of its rooms are of pine trees and woods. Our gang of four -- including an 11-year-old daughter and a teenage son -- stayed in a two-bedroom condo that included a fireplace and a full kitchen, spacious enough to handle twice that many people if you're considering sharing with relatives or another family.

Water park wise, Chula Vista has some winning features. The Jungle Adventure Bowl ride sends raft riders in a centrifugal spin before dumping them down a tube. A bit rougher, the Fly'n Mayan Water Coaster uses spinning belts to help speed riders up and down riverlike chutes. Chula also offers a way for folks to race each other aboard mats, with a digital timer declaring the winner.

Chula has a spa for adults and better food offerings than most water park resorts. We ate at the buffet but the steaks at Chula Vista's white tablecloth restaurant, Kaminski Brothers Chop House, had me itching to pull out the plastic and indulge.

Chula Vista has a couple amenities that made it memorable for us: a large, outdoor, pool-sized hot tub -- where you relax in the warm waters while snowflakes fall around you -- and a device I had never seen before: a Haystack Dryer.

The Haystack, made by a British-based company, is similar to a photo booth, only it is large enough for four people. And instead of pictures being snapped, warm drying lights pop on and a windstorm of warm air blows inside. For a buck or two, the whole family can be dried and toasty in a few minutes. And it's fun!

One of the hottest items on the show floor - literally - was the new Haystack Dryer, a full body drying machine for people. The Haystack is made for amusement or waterparks where soaked guests want to get warm and dry in a hurry. Up to four people step into the machine which then blasts them with 113 degree hot air for up to three and a half minutes.

November 19th, 2008 Mom to theme parks: Get Haystack Dryers!
Theme Park Mome

Theme Park Mom

One of Theme Park Mom's tenets is that you plan for getting wet at a theme park by wearing lightweight clothing, bringing a change of clothes or a bathing suits, etc. But what if you could get your family dry almost as quickly as they got wet?

Enter the U.K. - company Haystack Dryers. the dryers are on display at an Orlando convention for amusement operators this week. They use infra-red lamps to dry you and your clothing in minutes after that wet ride. The company says the theme-park version will dry a family of five.

A number of theme parks in Europe privide the dryers. There's often a change of about $2 to use them. Unless it's a very hot day, I'd gladly pay $2 to get my family dry. How about you?

The dryers were installed at Dollywod earlier this fall. Theme Park Mom hopes this trend sweeps the U.S!

November, 2008 Orlando Weekly - Live Active Cultures by Seth Kubersky
Orlando Weekly

IAAPA. Say it with me, please: "eye-AP-pah." It's the sweetest sound in the theme-park business. Take the entire north and south wings of the massive Orange County Convention Center and fill them to capacity with every product imaginable that's offered at an entertainment attraction, then set loose a sea of polo-shirted salespeople for a week of networking and negotiations. To an industry outsider, it's like a free day at the fair, except the carnies have business cards and there are grown men in ties on the kiddie rides.

Since 1918, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions has been an advocate for the "common defense and common advancement" of amusement-park operators. But this year's expo came on the cusp of the most challenging economic environment in a generation. On the surface, everything appeared much as it did at last year's convention, with only a slightly detectable decrease in attendance. But in the two days that I spent on the expo floor (still not nearly enough time to examine every exhibit), I detected a chill wind whistling through the carnival tent.

I saw less emphasis this year on the "next big thing," and more on making the most of what attractions already have in play. There were few ambitious new domestic projects; the most impressive concept art displayed at the convention will be realized in places like Dubai and China. Many attraction offerings were from the bargain bin, with Ital International and Rides-4-U heartbreakingly advertising Coney Island's and Cypress Gardens' stables of "high-quality rides in search of new homes." Instead, I saw less expensive but still innovative ways for park operators to "plus" their products and hopefully pull more coin from visitors who can still afford a vacation. Here's my subjective sampling of products and proposals that may impact your parkgoing experiences in the years to come:

Rides
At last year's convention, ride manufacturer Zamperla took the thrill-king crown with its oversized exhibit. The powerful Parachute Drop was back this year, but a simple circular flyer replaced the award-winning Kang-A-Bounce, and the fun-but-tame Surf's Up substituted for the far-wilder Disk'O Coaster. This backed up a general trend away from the terrifying and toward the family-friendly instead. The biggest, most awesome ride on the convention floor this year was Felimana Luna Park's fabulously old-fashioned threestory classic carousel. Other signs of tough times included Premier Rides, still proudly displaying the Maximum RPM! Ferris-wheel coaster they built for the short-lived Hard Rock Park, and Sally Rides' fantastic Forbidden Island dark ride, which remains a bluesky concept in search of a buyer. One notable exception was Maurer Söhne's scale model of Universal Orlando's under-construction Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit, which finally provided concrete confirmation of the prototype coaster's groundbreaking track layout.

Fair food
Food freebies took a big hit at this year's expo, both in quantity and quality. As it was last year, the longest line was for the Noble Roman's Bistro, which can reportedly turn out 4,000 pizza slices an hour. I also saw a machine that shot out piping-hot flat cakes at an astounding velocity and volume; shame they tasted like freeze-dried ass. The best thing I tasted was old-fashioned sarsaparilla served from Chuck Wagon Soda's wooden barrels - probably because the Pennsylvanian company uses real sugar instead of crappy corn syrup.

4D and interactivity
While there were fewer low-end simulators shown this year, the buzz around 4D and interactivity continues unabated. Many vendors were offering incremental upgrades to existing products, like Alterface, which demoed a new Pirate's Plunder program for their excellent Desperados horseback simulator/light-gun video game. Everyone and his brother had a 3D movie with rocking seats and spritzing water; I wish local parks had the peripheral-vision-friendly wraparound glasses offered by FantaWild Adventure, a jaw-droppingly detailed park in Wuhu, Anhui, China. The only thing I experienced that felt like a true breakthrough was the Augmented Reality demoed by Total Immersion, where guests used digital "binoculars" to experience well-rendered CGI creatures interacting with physical sets in real time. Already in use at France?s Futuroscope park, this technology looks like the next evolutionary step beyond clunky ?90s-era virtual reality.

Upsell option
Many vendors at IAAPA don't make theme parks; they make theme parks better (or at least a tad more expensive). I chatted with the big man at Colorvision International, vendors of the photo ops offered as you exit Universal's attractions. He showed me an e-mail-enabled kiosk intended for the Simpsons Ride (installed only in Hollywood because Orlando didn't ask in time). And he explained why the scores disappeared from the Men in Black photos: They suppressed sales to the losers. He also confirmed that his company will handle the cutting-edge cameras being installed in every seat of the new Rockit coaster (though he wouldn?t let slip if said souvenir would be delivered on DVD or virtually via YouTube).

Most interesting upcharge opportunity: Haystack Dryers' speed-drying booths, coming soon to a water park near you, can take an entire family from drenched to bone-dry with just three minutes of hot air.

January 10th, 2008 Cutting carbon emmissions in the leisure sectors

Haystack Dryers is working with leisure facilities throughout the UK to help reduce their carbon footprint.

With the current focus on climate change, leisure facilities are constantly investigating ways to minimise their carbon footprint. One way they can do this is by installing a body dryer from Haystack Dryers which has far less impact on the environment than traditional towel usage.

The washing and drying of towels in health clubs and leisure centres not only represent a significant cost for operators but also increases their carbon emissions. But by using people body dryers instead of towels operators can significantly reduce both of these.

"An average health club which offers dryers instead of towels can reduce its weekly CO2 emissions by over half," says Paul Thomas, Managing Director at Haystack Dryers who has helped many leisure sites throughout the UK and Europe reduce their carbon footprint. "The savings from a 2,500 member club could result in a 71,224kg reduction of CO2 per year." The Carbon Trust states that an organization in the sport and leisure sector, with an average annual energy spend of £1m produces 8,100 tonnes of CO2 per year.

According to the National Energy Foundation, the average wash cycle on a standard drum washing machine uses 0.599kg of CO2 when washing a load of four towels. The total CO2 emissions increase to a massive 1.5100Kg of CO2 once these have been placed in a tumble dryer. Independent research has indicated that using a Haystack Dryer at a leisure or water park venue can reduce a family's towel usage by a minimum of 50%, representing a saving of 0.5462Kg of CO2 per drying cycle. To put this into perspective, at a venue such as Center Parcs where a single dryer performs in excess of 3,000 cycles per month, there is a massive monthly saving of 1,638Kg Of CO2, resulting in an annual saving of 19,663Kg of CO2 when compared to usual towel use!

The Haystack Dryer range operates by providing a vortex of air which is circulated in the drying chamber, allowing any air that flows out to be continually collected via the inlet grills, making it incredibly efficient. Using a dryer at a health club or leisure centre completely eliminates the need for towels and has significantly less harmful impact on the environment.

Paul Thomas says "reducing carbon emissions should be high on everyone's agenda. As well as making savings for health clubs and leisure centres, people dryers can help operators reduce their carbon footprint, improve their reputation with customers and set targets to reduce emissions in the future."

September 19th, 2007 Winchester Tennis & Squash Club works with local school & business to improve facilities for children

Winchester Tennis and Squash Club is working with Weeke Primary School and a local company to encourage pupils to get active and develop sporting stars of the future.

Aimed at five to eight year olds, the scheme accommodates approximately 120 children who receive professional coaching in squash and tennis on a weekly basis.

Maggie Hastie, Head Teacher at Weeke Primary School says "we were thrilled to hear that a local company was interested in sponsoring years one to three to take part in squash and tennis lessons at the Winchester Club. Keeping active is important to everyone at Weeke. We offer a range of sporting opportunities during and after the school day and also encourage staff to set an example by cycling to school or keeping fit."

In 2006, Weeke Primary School received the National Healthy Schools status, recognising their commitment to keeping children active. With this in mind the school adopted an 'achievement for all' motto, ensuring that all pupils will have the best opportunities to take part in sport during their time at Weeke.

England Squash has already provided a free taster day for all the children on the scheme which consisted of mini squash and tennis aimed at beginners and intermediates with different size balls to suit the different skill levels.

Billy Kerr, General Manager at Winchester Tennis and Squash Club, says "we work with a number of schools in the local area and we're delighted to now be offering our tennis and squash coaching and facilities to Weeke Primary School. The importance of sports development for all at such a young age allows the children to experience the sport and maybe continue to play at a club or county level in the future."

Haystack Dryers is the local company sponsoring the initiative this year with the hope that further local sponsorship will ensure the programme continues in the future.
