CUTTING CARBON EMISSIONS IN THE LEISURE SECTOR
- January 10th, 2008
Haystack Dryers is working with leisure facilities throughout the UK to help reduce their carbon footprint.
With the current focus on climate change, leisure facilities are constantly investigating ways to minimise their carbon footprint. One way they can do this is by installing a body dryer from Haystack Dryers which has far less impact on the environment than traditional towel usage.
The washing and drying of towels in health clubs and leisure centres not only represent a significant cost for operators but also increases their carbon emissions. But by using people body dryers instead of towels operators can significantly reduce both of these.
“An average health club which offers dryers instead of towels can reduce its weekly CO2 emissions by over half,” says Paul Thomas, Managing Director at Haystack Dryers who has helped many leisure sites throughout the UK and Europe reduce their carbon footprint. “The savings from a 2,500 member club could result in a 71,224kg reduction of CO2 per year.” The Carbon Trust states that an organization in the sport and leisure sector, with an average annual energy spend of £1m produces 8,100 tonnes of CO2 per year.
According to the National Energy Foundation, the average wash cycle on a standard drum washing machine uses 0.599kg of CO2 when washing a load of four towels. The total CO2 emissions increase to a massive 1.5100Kg of CO2 once these have been placed in a tumble dryer. Independent research has indicated that using a Haystack Dryer at a leisure or water park venue can reduce a family’s towel usage by a minimum of 50%, representing a saving of 0.5462Kg of CO2 per drying cycle. To put this into perspective, at a venue such as Center Parcs where a single dryer performs in excess of 3,000 cycles per month, there is a massive monthly saving of 1,638Kg Of CO2, resulting in an annual saving of 19,663Kg of CO2 when compared to usual towel use!
The Haystack Dryer range operates by providing a vortex of air which is circulated in the drying chamber, allowing any air that flows out to be continually collected via the inlet grills, making it incredibly efficient. Using a dryer at a health club or leisure centre completely eliminates the need for towels and has significantly less harmful impact on the environment.
Paul Thomas says: “Reducing carbon emissions should be high on everyone’s agenda. As well as making savings for health clubs and leisure centres, people dryers can help operators reduce their carbon footprint, improve their reputation with customers and set targets to reduce emissions in the future.”

Winchester Tennis and Squash Club is working with Weeke Primary School and a local company to encourage pupils to get active and develop sporting stars of the future.
Aimed at five to eight year olds, the scheme accommodates approximately 120 children who receive professional coaching in squash and tennis on a weekly basis.
Maggie Hastie, Head Teacher at Weeke Primary School says: “We were thrilled to hear that a local company was interested in sponsoring years one to three to take part in squash and tennis lessons at the Winchester Club. Keeping active is important to everyone at Weeke. We offer a range of sporting opportunities during and after the school day and also encourage staff to set an example by cycling to school or keeping fit.”
In 2006, Weeke Primary School received the National Healthy Schools status, recognising their commitment to keeping children active. With this in mind the school adopted an ‘achievement for all’ motto, ensuring that all pupils will have the best opportunities to take part in sport during their time at Weeke.
England Squash has already provided a free taster day for all the children on the scheme which consisted of mini squash and tennis aimed at beginners and intermediates with different size balls to suit the different skill levels.
Billy Kerr, General Manager at Winchester Tennis and Squash Club, says: “We work with a number of schools in the local area and we’re delighted to now be offering our tennis and squash coaching and facilities to Weeke Primary School. The importance of sports development for all at such a young age allows the children to experience the sport and maybe continue to play at a club or county level in the future.”
Haystack Dryers is the local company sponsoring the initiative this year with the hope that further local sponsorship will ensure the programme continues in the future.
